Magnetic tape reels took up more space than other forms of digital memory, but their stability and favorable cost-per-bit ratio made them a popular early storage medium for enterprise computer backups. Hewlett-Packard offered several successful tape reel drives, and would be an industry leader in continuously shrinking digital tape media and devices.
