Meg Whitman Becomes CEO of HP
Date: 2010s
Meg Whitman became CEO of Hewlett-Packard Co. in 2011, bringing new leadership for the new decade. She arrived with extensive experience in the industry (most notably as CEO of eBay from 1998–2008) and in politics (having worked on several presidential campaigns and been the Republican candidate for Governor of California). When Hewlett-Packard was founded in 1939, a woman leading the company would have been hard to imagine, but the thousands of women who had joined Hewlett-Packard’s ranks in the intervening decades had proven again and again that women were capable of thriving at HP and helping HP to thrive. Their efforts helped make Whitman’s ascension possible.
